It is interesting that his character seems to be self-denial. It's a solid trait for a heroic type, and his actions do make a lot of sense when you view them through the idea that he thinks she's acting because there's no way she could ever love someone like him.
I am, however, a bit confused, because I thought it was already established that it couldn't be just a fake marriage. Doesn't the book need it to be real, and that's the whole problem?
