Tell your grandparents you love them
One of my grandfathers currently has a rare cancer devouring his leg and is fighting it. We check in on him every day, dreading the day he needs to go to hospice.
His wife, my grandmother, calls every single family member every day because she wants someone by her side at all times. Today she called 22 times asking for someone to stay over, and I was there yesterday.
That and she is absolutely horrible to deal with. Disowned one of my family members because she wanted to go into assisted living and they didn’t have the money to actually fund it for her. Complained when my relatives were in relationships because they weren’t the same religion as her. Drags her children down for every single decision they made that she considers bad. Constantly retorts that she thinks black people shouldn’t marry white people. Has an absolute hatred of Volkswagen cars because they’re German and she thinks they’re run by Nazis. Absolutely loves Elon Musk and wants to fall asleep to his voice. And of course, is most concerned about my grandfather’s cancer because it means he cannot take care of her.
Believe me, I want to try and cherish my grandparents too. But sometimes they can be absolute hell to deal with. Yes, god gives you only one family, but he also gives you one appendix and you take that out when it gets infected. Cherish your non-infected appendices, people.
