Well, if the horses escape the remaining enemy troops can just catch them and use them again. They're not that useful to bear and co. either, so to be blunt it's probably better to just deprive the enemy of potential advantages than take pity on the enemy's mounts. Honestly, the most useful thing the horses could do for bear and co. is get killed and eaten anyway.

... Those colour pages.
No matter how you look at it.... the okamimimi look fake. Logically, the fur on the ears should be the same colour as the hair on the head... or at least transition smoothly. It doesn't though. Not for any of them.
