For a high school student, spending $50 on a plate of meat for kBBQ would be an insane extravagance. As a point of comparison, you can get a nice kobe beef course meal for about 10k yen. This is also in an economy where you can get an onigiri from the convenience store for like 1-200 yen. A couple of those, and a drink and you've got a meal for under 500 yen.

It just takes a while before you get used to any increased income and adjust your standards of living and relative scales of monetary value to match. That's also the reason why for some lotteries that give a shit about the winners, they will contact any major division winners to arrange for financial advice and planning.
