i don't like to nag but page 15 "if someone found out i'll be scolded" is really bothering me (especially as i'm literally right now learning apposition in german ) it should be "if someone FINDS out i'll GET scolded"

The only reason the Japanese school cares is because if a student causes trouble somewhere, like is caught shoplifting, the school will be called and the homeroom teacher will need to go visit the police to explain stuff. If that weird responsibility of the school for stuff happening outside of school hours was removed, Japan would become a normal country in one thing more, and the school wouldn't try to tell the students they aren't allowed to drop by a convenience store to buy the bottle of soy sauce their mother asked them to bring on their way home.

The idea is that a student when in uniform represents the school. Doing something bad reflects on the school, as in not instilling proper behaviour in students, and since schools compete about students it becomes important. Of course doing anything that makes you stand out is looked askance upon in Japan.

If schools are concerned about being misrepresented by students in uniforms, maybe they should get rid of uniforms. 😒
Also, schools shouldn't compete for students. Students should receive equivalent education regardless of what school they go to(emphasis on should). Competition among schools is a sign that this isn't the case.
This is all endemic of a bigger problem. Even if we don't want to solve that problem, we should still resolve its symptoms.

@SoloSera So you think children should learn from machines, I take it? We are all different, which means all teachers are different. Some will inherently be better than others. The better ones provide better education, which means they are worth more, which means the school needs more money to employ them. Schools get bigger budgets depending on performance, meaning having better or more students becomes a competition.
This is the case in USA as well, I believe. It's just a facet of capitalism. Don't know if the Japanese school system is a relic of American influence after WW2. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The only feasible way to solve it would be to equalize learning through machines, and thus equalize school budgets.
I live in a fairly socialist country. While we don't have competing schools, every single school I went to (there were quite a few😑, due to moving around a lot) complained about lacking funds.

@cor3zone Can machines provide better education? If they can, then I don't have problem with that. The point is (supposed to be) to give every single person decent baggage of knowledge so that they would be functional members of society. I mean, you can also provide elite education to stand above less fortunate masses, but it's generally frowned upon in modern society.
Also every single budget organisation will be complaining about budget, it's inevitable with finite amout of resources.

@PlanOfInaction That's the point. Inequality is part of the human condition. Unless someone is worse off, we're never content. The trick is to be on the winning side.

@kwendy Potentionally, yes. If the highest quality educators develop the 'perfect' curriculum, likely with a mix of interactive media, and it is then taught equally to all students by machines, it would probably result in higher educational standards on average. Some students would be left behind, if the curriculum doesn't suit their learning style. But that still happens with actual teachers as well; if the teacher's style doesn't match the student's, and the student has no other options.
Of course everyone complains about budget. My point is, if all school budgets are equal, you can just dismiss any complaints straight off.

You know of those scenes of delinquents, or gangs squatting just outside of convenience stores? They're probably talking about that. Convenience stores can be a hang out place just like game centers are. They don't want the kids to loiter around while still in their uniforms.
