Why can he appraise monsters and objects just by holding his hand over them, but he has to taste test all of his poisons?

Edit: Also, isn't spilling all of that deadly poison on the ground when Ash is right there incredibly dangerous for the pup?

In the first chapter he explains that he has to kill a monster for it to be appraised, where as herbs and such need to be eaten... in other words it's just stupid contrivances by the author.

Also the pup was shown to be smart, so I guess it just knows that he deals with poison or something.
