If more hope is needed, I have a little exerpt from Gaiden here that is only a small part of a larger scene that damn near murdered me when I read it;

They found themselves in front of a busy street, bustling with people. The fact that it was currently the lunch rush hour certainly did not help. If they wanted to reach the restaurant, crossing this street was the only option. Monica hesitated for a moment, unsure if it was better to search for a detour, or recommend a different restaurant.

“Come on, let’s go,” Cyril said, grabbing Monica’s right hand.

Monica’s brain ceased function for exactly five seconds, before suddenly resuming with a flood of thoughts. Cyril’s hand was currently wrapped around her hand. In common parlance, this could be considered as “holding hands”, an incredibly significant act. The moment Monica recognized this, her heart started pounding intensely. She could feel her whole body growing hot.

W-W-W-What do I do? I’m probably making a weird face. And my heart rate is going crazy. Lord Cyril is definitely going to notice… Oh, but he’s not touching my wrist, so he can’t measure my pulse, right…!

Indeed, there was no way for Cyril to realize her internal turmoil——or so Monica initially thought.

Cyril had slender fingers for a man, but his hand was still much larger than Monica’s. In other words, his fingers might brush against Monica’s wrist… possibly.

Monica turned pale at the realization.

Okay...but does it matter? Will this lead to anything? I think baiting a fan favorite coupling like this is even worse if she doesn't end up with him. In all honesty, I don't think she should get into a romantic relationship at all, not with all that baggage inside that head of hers. She needs love, but not that kind of love. But most of all, she needs love from her to herself.

Many actual victims of the kind of abuse that Monica suffered have spoken out repeatedly about how harmful comments like yours are, and how it reinforces the idea that abuse victims are too damaged to love or be loved in return. Many of them, like Monica, find the idea of self love almost impossible to comprehend. But they love others so much that they'll do anything to make them happy, including actually taking care of themselves because they don't want to make the ones they care about worry. Monica's romantic relationship never becomes the main focus of the story of Secrets of the Silent Witch, nor does it eclipse the importance of her friendships, especially with Lana. And the story DOES make a point of waiting until Monica has had time to heal and make improvements on her anxiety and trauma before it adds romance on the plate. For over two years in canon, as a matter of fact.

I understand the distaste at the idea of romance being portrayed as a cure all for abuse and trauma, but there is a lot of care taken here to make sure that that isn't what happens, and thoughtless and cruel comments like yours are far more damaging than a slowburn background romance to a story about a girl overcoming her past.

Hey, I'm not the one focusing on the romance. People are too quick to start making ships left and right, and it's honestly kind of off putting, especially when the story is trying to take itself seriously. She is obviously having all sorts of emotional stress and trauma, she can't even seem to have a good night's sleep without getting horrible nightmares, and here we are trying to sweep that under the rug and just focus on who's going to end up getting into her panties? Really? I wasn't even trying to be mean to the character, my comment was directed at the people who are only in it for the romance aspects of the story (which the story doesn't even focus on romance for god's sake). I like her character, but it would be a shame that after all this development, her getting the right boyfriend is the one and only solution to her problems. Also, I don't like Cyril, lol (don't care much for ANY of the male characters TBH).

Seem like Monica's old teacher probably know that Monica is the same Monica he taught, but also probably know that there's reason why she's avoiding him (and probably happy to see her become less shut-in). That's said, it's just speculation on my reading.

the prince is so cute. i’m fangirling with him but looking at the replies makes me kinda sad. sadly i don’t like cyril at all and would rather she didn’t end up with anyone. i feel like the teasing and fanservice for ships in the story is okay but the story would be much better without a love interest. i’m more interested in monica as a character rather than the romance she may develop..
