squirrel is actually more of a term of endearment because.. well he met her and her primary food source was nuts. the pet thing is over the top but it's also him speaking in "fancy pants bullshit mode" because he's having to use "noble logic" in order to shut people up. he just doesn't know if she's an assassin but also cares about her because he sees his younger self reflected in her behavior.
