I’m CONVINCED he was brainwashed, maybe even magically, and she broke through it… or well, gave him the hints and tool to break free, at the very least.
Yeah, he was vulnerable to even mundane manipulation, but I’m sure there was magic used to help him ignore or blur the inconsistencies.

I really hope he’ll join her. Q-Q
Nah, that didn't require any magic. Literally it was a sycophant knowing which words to use, to pull at the strings of vulnerable people, to convince them of things that their situation makes them believe are ok.

Though some people would argue that's magic in and of itself.

I do like the acknowledgment on the last page that Jelly has very little context for what the heck Berger is saying. She can tell he's deeply conflicted and has a functional moral compass, but she was entirely responding to what he said, without the knowledge of his backstory.

You know, for being a mere Slime,
If years of MangAnime has taught us anything, there is no such thing as a mere slime...
They're the most versatile of the monster types, and , literally, do not fit a fixed mould...

Basic, "level 1" , slimes are very weak, yes. So are squishy level 1 Adventurers...
Evolved/developed slimes, like experienced/levelled Adventurers, are quite another matter....

"It's just a mere Slime" is a Red Flag for a WTFPWNing by said Slime... :p

Thanks for the chapter!
I hope that this guy doesn't get offed next chapter
That chasm right behind him is rather ominous. I'm thinking he definitely gets knocked down there, but I think rather than dying, we'll see Jelly use some Slime Powers (TM) to save him, and he'll be the first human to find out she's a slime.

Even in Dragon Quest games that let you tame monsters, the slimes are usually very weak all around yet see massive increase in their abilities once they reach the very late levels of the game. Like near cap. And the first game to allow you to tame them was released in 1992.

Yeah, and that series is mainly responsible for the image of slimes as weak beginner monsters in the first place.

Well done Jelly! She was actively trying to figure this out even if she was using his conclusions in her favor.

It's very subtle, but her sainthood comes from innate respect for humans. I think it's very funny in an ironic sense.

Wonder if this is like how most people quote books they only pretend to have finished...
Finished as in played all the games? I have not, but it mostly came from the first few on the NES, which I have finished. The series was ridiculously popular in Japan during that period, and the beginning areas had you fight slimes and red slimes. The image was already established after that, even when they later added stronger slimes. In a Japanese work when you see someone refer to slimes being weak, they'll often make DQ slime specific references as well.

I mean grinding and advancing a little into even one of the games, I mean. At some point you meet slimes in most of these games that will disabuse you of the "weak" notion esp if they catch you low on HP. (Or at least they did for me ) I think a lot of folks dropped it sooner than they were willing to admit.
