is this a common occurrence in japanese society, namely high schoolers? looking down on older and/or non-mainstream pop music? at least in the us, old music is very much appreciated and loved, to the point where people wear older band merch even if they don't listen or gate-keep older music.

I relate to this in two ways
It kinda reminds me when some of us were kids and or teens, liking anime was pretty much an invitation for being mocked... I also remember letting people check my playlists a few times when I was younger and friendless. They would always ow-key make fun of me for having stuff like weird experimental music and old blues records mixed in there and not one pop song current to the time.

Finding people who you can talk freely to about the stuff you like is always liberating

If the protagonist wasn't Chad, the story would be more relatable.
