Even if nobody wants him around long enough to talk, write letters explaining yourself. Sure, they might trash it if you see your name, but try an anonymous copy at a different point in time, etc.

"He's not an asshole, he's just destructively useless! It's totally fine!"

What some people sound like in this thread.
He wasn't useless, just not nearly as helpful as he could have been. He did, in fact, help her and make things better. He seriously fucked up and caused unnecessary additional trauma, that shouldn't just be overlooked of course, but if he hadn't been there it would have been far worse.

I'm surprised nobody is saying anything about her parents also making it worse by not allowing the misunderstanding to be cleared up. Obviously that wouldn't have magically fixed anything, but it would have helped if she knew what actually happened. Even without letting him meet Nanami, her parents could have at least heard what he had to say.

With the extra context now I don't think he's an ass or an awful person, he was just so bad at dealing with the situation back there that at first glance he appears malicious.
If he had sent Nanami the same screenshot of the group chat between the girls that he received with some explanation he wouldn't have had to be in such a rush to say everything in that one moment he had.

Dude accidentally made himself the villain instead of the girls, and the parents were helping him with that.

But the dude had zero personal growth after that. Be didn't embrace otaku culture or make friends with other otakus. He literally just kept doing what be did
So? Neither did Nanami for quite a while, until she got outside help.

Sigh, not every character needs a redemption arc.
What mangas are everyone reading who think such an overwhelming amount of jerks and villains get redemption arcs that it's the default? I can't match that perception with what I read.

I don't understand everyone slagging him for the way it happened. He is a closet otaku, while I have never been one, I can understand why one choose to live like that, especially in Japan. He has no control over what the girls did, he tried his best to prevent the worst outcome, not the best thing he possibly could do, but the best thing he can try in a panic, and ended up hurting Nanami inadvertently.

The rest is just plot device to justify Nanami's trauma... Because apparently he couldn't explain what happened to the parents, and the parents apparently couldn't relay that to Nanami. The guy basically has reverse plot armor. If he is the MC, the drama would have been resolved in 5 chapters top.

I think amending the panels actually detracts from the TL — as you say, the context is unclear. Your initial translation is likely what Nanami heard as well, so leaving the original translation actually makes this chapter more impactful because it adds “oh, she heard one thing, but he was really saying another” to the reveal of his motives.

In conclusion, dude still sucks and should be given to Osaka-san for use as an attaché case.

I think that's fair

But the dude had zero personal growth after that. Be didn't embrace otaku culture or make friends with other otakus. He literally just kept doing what be did

And the chapter title is literally "I've kept making the same mistakes"...

It's almost like another traumatic moment makes him even more withdrawn than before...

Even if nobody wants him around long enough to talk, write letters explaining yourself. Sure, they might trash it if you see your name, but try an anonymous copy at a different point in time, etc.

He literally went to her house to try and apologize in person MULTIPLE TIMES and got rejected, do you really think a letter that would seem even less sincere would fare better?

If he had sent Nanami the same screenshot of the group chat between the girls that he received with some explanation he wouldn't have had to be in such a rush to say everything in that one moment he had.

Because she wasn't checking her message (likely due to getting her place ready to welcome the others): https://mangadex.org/chapter/b95b015e-bb9c-4335-841c-5ebc2a6a3cce/4

That's why he rushed over in person.
