I don't get people who still consider him a horrible person. He had a panic attack and made a mistake, he tried to apologize multiple times and was prevented from doing so, did what he could to make amends and then closed off even more to prevent his weakness from showing ever again. What else must've he done? Or is it if you make one mistake, you're better off dead?
On other hand, I will blame her overprotective parents for her trauma. If the guy was allowed to explain himself for a minute, everything would've been resolved just like that. Instead, she got months to shut away from the world, letting this idea that she got brutally rejected by her only friend to fester on her mind constantly. Helicopter parenting was the means to turn this incident into trauma.

I wonder why everyone still after this guy's ass after the new context ?
I mean he try do good for other but just accident do harm instead. and as a collector myself, this guy is a hero to her collection. I can't imagine what it would be like if this guy is not there.

Tbh, I don't think this is best written arc (like how it that hard to clear up the misunderstanding after all that time, make no freaking sense) and i also don't like the direction of making the villain/bully turn out actually just misunderstood, but that on author and the writing. it would much more powerful if she can stand up or facing again an old bully despite the trauma, Instead "yeah she now can forgive him aNd MoVing oN, because turn out the bully is actually 100% innocence, just misunderstood ¯\(ツ)/¯ " make everything weak af.
Fr people be hating just to hate. I can’t imagine these people people resolving any sort of situations peacefully.

I'm surprised nobody is saying anything about her parents also making it worse by not allowing the misunderstanding to be cleared up. Obviously that wouldn't have magically fixed anything, but it would have helped if she knew what actually happened. Even without letting him meet Nanami, her parents could have at least heard what he had to say.
This right here. They clearly thought they were protecting her, but the fact that he came back numerous times to try and fix his mistake and they kept rebuffing him at the door without even hearing him out means they're just as big a contributor to her trauma as Makabe was.

All they had to do was hear what he had to say, then pass it onto Nanami and let her decide. They could have potentially saved her years of dealing with her issue.

Honestly the translation differences are so subtle you could headcanon the first translation was how Nanami remembered his words rather than what he actually said, and it'd be fine. You guys have high standards so the apology is understandable but I don't fault you for it at all, especially since we didn't have context yet.

I sympathize with him somewhat but please fcking get loss anyway. I hope that the writing of the story doesn't just suddenly go to shit and have Nanami forgive him. Understanding why he did it is fine but forgiving is just too much.
What the parents did make sense for me too. Like, would you just believe in the guy who literally gave your daughter trauma and made her holed up in her room completely? I'm not saying that that's the right thing to do tho.

I think amending the panels actually detracts from the TL — as you say, the context is unclear. Your initial translation is likely what Nanami heard as well, so leaving the original translation actually makes this chapter more impactful because it adds “oh, she heard one thing, but he was really saying another” to the reveal of his motives.

In conclusion, dude still sucks and should be given to Osaka-san for use as an attaché case.
I agree, I think keeping Makabe appearing more heinous in the early chapters to show the misconveying is correct

I think that's fair

But the dude had zero personal growth after that. Be didn't embrace otaku culture or make friends with other otakus. He literally just kept doing what be did
This on so many levels.

First he screws really bad (I get a panic attack, but he could have said and done so many different things) and even the new translation still makes him an ass*ole...but after that instead of understanding that if he continue like this he'll live all his life in lies and denying what he likes wouldn't make him really happy, guess what? He still sticks with the "normal" people. Like, lessons learned : zero

Nope, not an once of sympathy for him

People don't like admitting being wrong, even if they were "right" as far as the narrative was concerned up until a reveal. And yeah, there's a huge amount of people just wanting to hate. A lot of them claim to be anti-hate. People don't understand the concept of forgiveness, and usually conflate it with accepting payment for a deed. Forgiveness isn't earned or payed for; it's given. It's cheap to "forgive" someone who's returned equal or more than what they've cost.

I hope that the writing of the story doesn't just suddenly go to shit and have Nanami forgive him.
I don't think it would go to shit for that. It was not malicious, so it's fine to forgive something like that.

Sigh, not every character needs a redemption arc. And good intention but such horrible execution that leaves a person's trauma = trash, no salvagable, no brownie points for "trying".

I don't agree with the conclusion, but agree with the basic premise. It's weird that the whole traumatic event is explained away as a misunderstanding from a badly executed good intention... Well, even calling that badly executed is a stretch, I don't get how a panicked plea and just a little raised voice have to ended as a deep scar and turning someone into a hikki.

I was expecting a more heinous past, just the short flashback of the guy screaming already felt tame for me, and now it's elaborated as just simply misunderstanding from someone who while weak willed, is genuinely a good guy.

The whole thing was meh.

I'm surprised I got quoted like 3 times. To be clear, I'm ambivalent on the character, I definitely sympathize with the situation, but I can't emphathize.

For me the only disjoint is his willingness to go and try and apologize despite the scary dad many times and also rat out his former friends yet he still literally lacks the commitment to try and fix the initial problem with his closet otaku ness?

I guess it's more true to life when a character isn't acting like he's in a book and has obvious flaws, but the whole point of fictional stories is that good ones let their characters grow.

He'll probably get his character development after this meeting with the two of them but he's getting all this discourse because of his own trappings of being a character that doesn't tug heart strings the way a character with true determination to change would get.

And yeah I agree with another commenter here that people basically already built up hate for him throughout the series so its difficult for them to forgive him mentally without a good arc and adequate story. Honestly this isn't a BAD way to do an exposition per se, I've seen much worse - but it isn't enough to really make up for a lot of people's built up Boogeyman feelings.
