Yeah, when you get high up in the competition leagues, it can become like a chore. It works for some people, but others don't like it. Making what you like your job can be good or bad. Also, I don't think she'd like speedrunning either.

Sure, that can happen by definition, but it's not always a bad thing.

Yeah, and sometimes it's not the hobby itself, but everything around it. I went from a hobby programmer to professional, and while it didn't turn the programming into a chore, all management and crap around it was just a PITA. So I quit, and I don't regret it at all. Though interestingly, the part where I worked in tech support (and eventually managing it at the point where I quit) was among the most fun, despite all tales you hear about idiot questions. Interacting with those people is far more pleasant than with a boss who is absolutely certain he understands you.

This was true for me with music; studying music made me want to stop playing music. But programming is really fun as a career.

Actually what I've found is that you don't need to avoid this but rather make sure they don't consume your time. Find other activities you enjoy alongside your Work Hobby and limit your direct exposure. For example your hobby could be model trains. A model train story wouldn't be enough direct exposure to the hobby as it would mostly just be running a store regardless of the product like how the fashion girl from last chapter did it.

You just leverage your hobby based expertise to improve your career.
