I have seen in enough manga how students like to stick to their uniform that I doubt it really plays a role. You'd probably assume they are on their way to some school club related competion or whatever.

If that was the case, there would probably be more than just two of them. And I think there would probably be a much greater chance that students from outside Tokyo would be heading into the city for a competition, not students from Tokyo heading somewhere else.

That's why I didn't react to it. They're in a relatively empty train, so asking them where they're heading is just casual conversation. Maybe also a bit of keeping track of where they're heading so they don't fall asleep and go past their stop or something.

As far as traveling alone, I don't see anything unusual with it. I once took a long-distance bus back when I was in 5th or 6th grade, to visit a pen pal. You know, back in the day where people wrote physical letters (although we started chatting on ICQ, if anyone remembers that).

Well, they've already established that cross-dressed Kaoru looks like his mother, so obviously his dad will have memory damage and the only way to calm him down and start helping him to heal will be for Kaoru to impersonate his own mother and flirt with his dad.

I suppose in East Asia it might be normal to ask. Not as much individual-centric culture there. I wasn't referring to communiting, though. Just travelling to some other town/city for whatever reason.
