I really think that that the mangaka is making way too big a deal of this. 1) They still have massive electronic communication available. 2) They won't be that far apart (300 miles, with high speed rail connecting them).

Of course, this is not as easy as being physically together all of the time, but there are plenty of couples who have to live with much greater, much longer separation.
