Call me wrong, but it's wrong to use "jealous" here and should be "envious". Envy used towards what one has not but wish to possess, and jealousy towards what one fears to lose.
And in the case of this cafe-woman, it's the former.

2 out of 3 definitions of Jealousy proved my point. The 1st definition used "envy" to explain jealousy.... yeah, solid logic. smh

English has equalized envy and jealousy. Truly pathetic language in this regard.

@Xarxyc I'm honestly in the same boat with various words and phrases. I could go on a good rant any day of the week about how much I hate "blood is thicker than water" for being the exact opposite of what it originally meant, and the only logical reason I can fathom for the change is that some douche(s) were trying to guilt their family members into helping them even at great personal expense. But it really doesn't matter because this is exactly how languages have always worked, not just English.

They can change in seemingly ridiculous leaps and bounds with the times and generally make people either feel old, or actually act old by blaming everything on the younger generation just like the previous generations have done since the dawn of time. Some caveman probably thought the kids doing cave paintings were collosal fuckups and pined for the good old days before every kid had their face glued to a smartphone wall art.

Don't lose hope, Shimamura-san!

...because if you got no hope looking like that and working at a net cafe, the rest of us need to start digging our graves already.
