sir you're so right that i couldn't agree with you more even if i were to live a thousand lives agreeing with you again, it is just illogical (wanted to say ill-logical for a pun, lol)when i see this kind of... bullshit (sorry for a lack of better words.)
i always wonder "who the hell is it even for?" it's just misery porn.
there's not a single moment when the writing isn't just miserable.
who the hell even want to read something like that? why would you create something like that?
i guess i can see it resonate with suicidal-peoples, but i still don't understand why you'd encourage them.
and it's a brand of writing i only see in japanese writing.
i've never seen "misery-porn" anywhere else but in japanese writing, whether it's movies or literature.
it's not "dark", it's "miserable", even "grim-dark" stories usually tries to lighten up the mood once in a while,
at least to make the drama and somber tone of the writing efficient.
here, i don't get it.
i don't understand why you'd write a story like that.
i don't understand why you'd write characters like that.
i don't understand why you'd read a story like that.
it's the kind of writing made only for peoples like it's author.
it's the kind of stories made by someone that aime to give you a 13th reason.
i guess if you absolutely hate life and everything it has to offer, it might be your alley.
but keep in mind,
there's only so much pity you can have for someone before it turn into frustration and then spite.
at some point, you're bound to think "maybe if they stopped with the self-pity and actually did something, things would change?"
I think it's a bit unfair to say only japanese indulge in this trope of misery porn. I meant In western fictions we get "Flower for Algergon" or "Catcher in the Rye" to name a few famous one. And on the trashy side we have "13 reasons why" lmao.when i see this kind of... bullshit (sorry for a lack of better words.)

you're right, i was being unfair, "misery-porn" is definitively also a thing in the western-culture.I think it's a bit unfair to say only japanese indulge in this trope of misery porn. I meant In western fictions we get "Flower for Algergon" or "Catcher in the Rye" to name a few famous one. And on the trashy side we have "13 reasons why" lmao.
Anyway, when it come to true mistery porn this manga is pretty tame. I would 100% agree with you if we are talking about series like Fire Punch, Oyasumi Punpun, Bokunora or Bokutachi ga Yarimashita which are all 'peak' misery porn where the plot just revolves around miserable people for the sake of it and I hold the same criticism as yours.
But this one for me is more on the psychological side with a heavy dose of drama at best. What I like is that it's a relatively realistic depiction of abuse where the man is the victim and the abuse is heavily psychological with a lot more nuiance. Plus the characters here act like adult most of the time as well (althought self-serving at time but that's just being human right.)
I mean... I wouldn't be surprisedHope this doesnt turn into a cheating manga
I mean... The Germans coined the term "Weltschmerz" which describes nearly everything that you are rumbling on about. And I don't actually get your point regarding this specific manga we are talking about right now. The psychology of guilt and loss of control are very well established in the story, I kind of enjoy it as it is challenging established ideas (e.g. "Mother knows best").you're right, i was being unfair, "misery-porn" is definitively also a thing in the western-culture.
but occidental and japanese "miseray-porn" don't exactly share the same "goal", if you see what i mean.
"13 reasons why" is absolutely miserable and the worst show ever (down to actually RAISING the ammount of suicides.)
but it's not miserable for the reason to make the viewer feel miserable,
whenever it presented something bad, or create anger and anticipation to set-up the """plot""" in the viewers.
it's indeed absolutely miserable, but not for the sake of making you feel depressed.
i feel like "misery-porn" made SPECIFICALLY for that is something you see considerably more in japanese medias.
when western-medias show misery, often the point they're trying to make is "we live in a society".
when japanase-medias show misery, it seem like their usual goal is just to inflict pain on their consumer.
from their SFW entertainment to their porn, it seem like they have a strange infatuation for despair, and i don't get it.
unrelated: you consider "Catcher in the Rye" as "misery-porn"?
that's a interesting opinion, please share it, i'd like to hear your reasoning.
personnally i've never considered it to be anything close to it, almost everything bad that happens to Holden is purely of his own fault.
That is absolutely hilarious.I had a look at the raws, and the japanese comments:
There will be a time skip later on to the kids being older in school, and school related issues become the core of the story.
Apparently the wife and husband resolve their issues somehow by then.
Japanese readers are divided cause the recent arc is about some new character who is trans, and the theme is about transphobia
Almost missed your point because I couldn't stop laughing at someone using "we live in a society" in a non-meme context.you're right, i was being unfair, "misery-porn" is definitively also a thing in the western-culture.

Surprised to hear there'll be a non-bad resolution between the husband and wife. Quite progressive of the mangaka to make an arc centered around that, gonna look forward to the translations whenever they get to that arc.I had a look at the raws, and the japanese comments:

yeah i'll be honnest, i don't see how the fuck the situation between the parents could be solved peacefully.Almost missed your point because I couldn't stop laughing at someone using "we live in a society" in a non-meme context.
Agree with you on the "Catcher in the Rye", I didn't see it as misery porn either.

eh divorce rate in Japan quite high with 35% marriage will ended with divorce. The way this unfolds is amazing. First you think the guy raped the daughter or something but no it was the tamest thing ever. Then you think "what if the guy just gets a divorce" but you remember this is Japan so it is what it is. The author even goes out of his way to try framing the wife as misunderstood, it's incredible.
That is absolutely hilarious.
I wonder if the teacher is supposed to symbolize the reader because I feel so connected to his opinion of the wife.
side note: sorry for the late reply haha.unrelated: you consider "Catcher in the Rye" as "misery-porn"?
