Yea I read the viet translation which got up to vol 8 now and really dissapointed with how the author end up handling the couple issue
That's...well, not the worst way to do it, but certainly not one that feels like a successful story arc :korone:.

Are there still cute puzzles at least?

I had a look at the raws, and the japanese comments:

There will be a time skip later on to the kids being older in school, and school related issues become the core of the story.

Apparently the wife and husband resolve their issues somehow by then.

Japanese readers are divided cause the recent arc is about some new character who is trans, and the theme is about transphobia
Oh no.
Yea I read the viet translation which got up to vol 8 now and really dissapointed with how the author end up handling the couple issue. They legit go "it's not abuse because she's emotionally stupid and didn't know how to convey her feeling" and they just resolved their problem like the guy didn't literally spent years living in hell. And they just glossed over the fact that the only reason why their relationship got better is literally because their daughter removed herself from the family, and the whole reason she resented the guy was becasue he "turned" her into a mother. That could have been an understable aspect to explore but instead they went the route she's a victim now because she almost got raped by the teacher guy but she didn't cheat so it's all good. :cautious: The manga truly drop to F tier now for me lol. I just can't stand the mother character lol.

I wish it stayed that way, but instead he got horny. 💀
Oh no, no, no.

Here I was, happy thinking that this is going to be a story without any Le Bad people, and that the couple's relationship was going to improve in a satisfying way, but reading this just made me sad instead. Angry, too.

I was really impressed with how the story ended up developing (up to currently translated English chapters), but this is just disappointing.

Probably some kind of mental disorder awareness manga. Definitely not misery porn.

I'm still trying to figure out what she has based on her symptoms. Maybe Postpartum-induced Schizophrenia

damn, that's not good, I mean, for now the problems of the family hasn't solved and I still can't say that the author knows how to give a good ending about emotional feelings... I'm scared of that not ending well..

This is a great manga for if you want to just get proper pissed the hell off, half of the characters are the biggest dickheads on thte planet and almost all of the rest are doormats that just take it and do nothing about it. the daughter's the real mvp 'cause as tragic as the dad is he's not blameless for just putting up with this bs.

if that's the case then i don't know if author is equipped to handle some of this stuff because these two mfs have NO business staying together lol.

when i see this kind of... bullshit (sorry for a lack of better words.)
i always wonder "who the hell is it even for?" it's just misery porn.

there's not a single moment when the writing isn't just miserable.
who the hell even want to read something like that? why would you create something like that?
i guess i can see it resonate with suicidal-peoples, but i still don't understand why you'd encourage them.

and it's a brand of writing i only see in japanese writing.
i've never seen "misery-porn" anywhere else but in japanese writing, whether it's movies or literature.
it's not "dark", it's "miserable", even "grim-dark" stories usually tries to lighten up the mood once in a while,
at least to make the drama and somber tone of the writing efficient.

here, i don't get it.
i don't understand why you'd write a story like that.
i don't understand why you'd write characters like that.
i don't understand why you'd read a story like that.

it's the kind of writing made only for peoples like it's author.
it's the kind of stories made by someone that aime to give you a 13th reason.
i guess if you absolutely hate life and everything it has to offer, it might be your alley.

but keep in mind,
there's only so much pity you can have for someone before it turn into frustration and then spite.
at some point, you're bound to think "maybe if they stopped with the self-pity and actually did something, things would change?"
Kinda funny how you miss such a basic point of all of this and keep on rambling about the dress and not what's inside the dress. It's quite simple honestly. Struggle. Every story worth its salt has struggle, even most slice-of-live ones and nearly every human can relate to that, especially if it's family issues (granted, this one here is quite extreme) since we all have them. Overcoming a challenge is one of the most primal drives of the human spirit and yet all you complain about is the tone and the colors of this comic. And there are far, far worse contenders for the avid misery guts than this comic.

Absolute shit show of a manga. The author just cannot make actual relationships with characters work, mainly because he wrote the FMC as an absolute selfish bitch. She never actually did something out of love for another person, not even for her daughter. All her actions were either something she wanted to do or what she thought was the right way to act as a parent (because she considers herself a good parent). She is portrayed in this manga as a straight-up psychopath (the main problem with people with psychopathic disorder is a complete lack of empathy, which is what we see here).

And after all this, the author tried to tell us, 'No, the husband too has problems with his personality, so they should just work through them together.' When, again, the wife is portrayed as an absolute manipulative bitch who cannot even fathom the concept of love for someone who is not herself.

This manga is enjoyable exclusively because none of the characters have a lick of common sense to them except for Ichika and her friend's mother, who was the only character to genuinely be kind to reitaro and he ended up insulting her to her face for it. He's so used to being abused that he doesn't bother trying to change anything and lashes out at anyone who isn't his family because he can't express himself to them, his wife is borderline bipolar and mildly psychotic with how controlling she is of Ichika and how excessively (almost to a comedic extent) abusive she is towards her husband, and everyone else who gets involved somehow sides with the mother except for Ichika who just wants them to not be absolute shit parents for once. I feel like the author really wants to say something about abusive relationships where the male is the victim for a change, but the spoilers just make him into even more of a victim if they're true. Honestly, the only way I can see them working out is through a separation/divorce where Reitaro learns to respect himself again and his wife learns that nobody wants to deal with her shit as a lifelong partner, and maybe after they work on themselves they potentially get back together, but I would see no reason for him to ever get back with her if he regrew even an inch of his spine.

The only way this manga would be redeemable is if it were a mental disability/schizophrenia awareness PSA. But that still doesn't explain the other characters having awareness issues. Maybe both parents have different mental issues.

Or Occam's Razor that the author doesn't know how to write rational characters.

I am going to say that as a person who grew up in a similar case of domestic abuse, this, it is a lot more bleak and real than you would expect. Even with the differences in legal systems between north America and japan, so many years and instances of similar hells with actually trying to get out. Not going in to details because I'm not going to talk about the court cases here. My dad had to essentially pray to god that one too many lies would be told, or else he wouldn't be able to get us fully out of there. To give you an idea of how bad it was, my bio mom didn't buy toilet paper and forced us to use barely washed facecloths. She refused to get her ability to care for us assessed after a court order, if you're wondering how that happened. She was also blind and frequently scammed everyone, including her relatives. Anyways.

Genuinely, the only thing that is fundamentally different between my experiences and here, is that my mother had a stroke that broke the last straw, and she couldn't come back.

This isn't misery porn, it's a lot closer to lived, real, and bleak experiences being used as fuel for this. Every couple pages, I'm reminded of the shit me, my sister, and my dad, all went through trying to get out of there.

Based on the spoiller that u guys share.
I still doubt that i'll get satysfied by the good end or how the couple get resolve their problem.
I have some scenario going in my head right now, but beside all good scenario, I still prefer if those couple get separate.

I mean, look at the current chapter, their existence is a thorn for each other. why would I want a good end in this story?
And that is the author duty to make the resolve is satisfied enough for us to be able forget what already happen in the past.

Any way thanks for the translation.

I'm halfway through the chapters, so my comment is solely about Ichika's situation with her parents. It's a bit long.

I've suspected my own parents have some sort of undiagnosed autism, and judging from the subtle hints dropped in various chapters, I think this is what the author is trying to convey as well. It's so shockingly similar to my life experience that it's uncanny.

The mom fixates on the parts of a conversation that trigger her emotionally. She projects her own feelings to situations and pulls assumptions out of nothing, then gets sad and angry over scenarios she completely made up in her own head. She also tries to wear a mask of normalcy, but her concept of "normal" is entirely based on what other people tell her it is.

The dad gets stunlocked into inaction because he has a need to scrutinize everything he does to perfection, since he can only think in black-and-white but still wants his unpredictable wife to be happy. He can't actively identify her emotional needs. This leads to careless statements like (SPOILER) "maybe if the morning sickness hurts so much you should abort the pregnancy" because he only processed the situation in a factual sense, without considering the emotional weight of his words.

Their daughter Ichika inherited some of their traits (autism), but leans more to the wavelength of her father, so she understands his actions more than her mom. She can also identify their incompetence and see that neither of her parents are being intentionally malicious to each other.

Hikari and his mom are meant as foils to each other on how other people would respond to encountering this situation, with Hikari's mom being "if something hurts, don't try to understand, just run away and look for something else" and Hikari himself being "I don't understand, but I care about you enough to make an effort".

The fact that the author phrased the title of the manga as a question also means we're supposed to think about whether or not it's a bad situation. Is this a family you should throw away? Are they bad people? Because they're not, no matter how bad it looks to outside observers. They're people with very severe communication issues, even by Japanese standards, who don't fully understand that they need to learn the right way to talk to someone before they can love them.

The daily riddle as an allegory plays into these themes too, because that's what communication is in Ichika's family. It's a tedious task that leads to a mundane answer, but it needs to be solved every single day.

This manga hurts so much to read.

While slightly exaggerated, the characters are caricatures of individuals that can really exist in the real world. Societal pressure breeds the worst kind of humans, who become dysfunctional parents that seed their children with a very specific strain of brainrot which forms abnormal tendencies and distorted worldviews.

Kazumi, the mother, grew up in an abusive environment where her father regularly beat her in an attempt to mold her into his image of a child she should be. Her view on males, including her own husband, were distorted to an excessive degree where her impression of everything he tries to do or say as being abusive towards her or their child.

it's actually tragic to see how her perception of her husband's actions caused her to develop a form of escapism where she truly believes that everything she did was for the good of Ichika and that the inaction of the husband to challenge her rules were taken as confirmation bias. It's a destructive behavior which will further distort the worldview of the child involved and I've seen many news regarding similar cases.

I wouldn't recommend this to most people since it would actually remind people of themselves or the people around them. But it would be a lie if I said that I didn't want to continue reading more of this.
