You're taking this too seriously. The first hook was to make a grand entrance and look cool, the second shiv was to show that "Hey look, dude effectively immune to mundane attack".

It's all just plot device in the end. Head gore is pretty jarring, no reason to do it when a simple chest stab will suffice.

In addition, it didn't seem like the goofy mama boy just went in without a plan. The way he said it, a battle of attrition is out of the question. I could be wrong but, looks like he was just taunting the guy and luring him somewhere, perhaps some preset magical sealing trap?
