This isn't shoujo or josei. In shounen or seinen, romance can be slower than your time in a dentist's operation chair.

He never really cared to think about beyond the mere form of the hina dolls. He was obsessed with the techniques needed to make one, not why they are made, what they symbolise, what's their background, and so forth, altough I'm sure he did know all of that as book knowledge. That doll set display is the imperial court, so he finally, staring at it, realised the kimonos of the dolls in it are supposed to represent antique clothes. To make Haniel's clothes, he certainly could use something that is kind of ancient or timeless, since they will be the clothes of a divine being.
