I think nowadays such jobs have strict Health and Safety rules, to minimize any risk on the job and protect their health, especially since someone working too long could create dangerous risks for everybody, and since for many such jobs it's actually hard to find skilled, experienced workers, so employers take care of those they already have, since accidents are bad for everybody, including the company.Well...
Meanwhile with mangaka it's like "Health, who cares? Can always go to hospital" Or at least it used to be, seems to be slowly changing. Since it's a "safe job", it has unsafe practices with nobody caring.
The only job that I know of that has the long hour grinds in a high risk/high rewards environment are those crab fishing boats featured in the Deadliest Catch show.
"Health? These broken ribs are just a minor inconvenience. Almost crushed by an 800-lbs crabbing pot? Almost swept overboard by the crashing waves of the 20ft swells? Running on 4 hours of sleep for the last 3 days? Who cares!?! So long as I don't die and the pots are full, I'm good!"
Yeah, I didn't think of that one. The thing that pops into my mind for hardest jobs are the miner and the oil field workers & firefighters. If one of those people in the Iraq wellhead picture were to drop their shield the blast of heat could very quickly severely burn them, perhaps even fatally if they get a good lung-searing inhale.
