I love how magic in this world is similar to the sciences by how it can progress by continued research and advancement. The decent yet short lifespan of humanity is also a weapon, since that's also more or less the duration for achieving technological progress. With enough combined effort and study, even short lifespans can be turned into shorter years for which we can see leaps on this world's magic.
