Also, nobody brought it up yet but the Old Man's wife knew about Frieren and how he left in the middle of the night to do the "job". She's definitely one of the 4 assassins sent by the Empire, posing as (what I'm guessing) "Mother". But unlike "Father", she's already moved on from it which is why she didn't bother Frieren.
I'm pretty sure the old man is the last one left from his group.

His wife is from the village who knew that her husband does things at night while nobody is looking. I mean even without anyone to kill, how the hell was he able to maintain his skills for so long while keeping his friendly image in the day?

I don't think the why or how matters here for the assassin plot. That's the beauty of the series is that this is some old mission and the only reason it's relevant is that frieren nearly outlived everyone involved and it commandeered multiple entire human lives, but to her she didn't even know about it and it was to her relatively no time at all.

I want to believe Frieren was calm because, as with the demon at the cell, she could protect her body with mana from physical attacks... And I want to think Stark body could endurance a slice to the throat from such a small weapon... Otherwise, this seems like lazy working and mindless plot armor.

I know Frieren has its up's and down's, but this was very different.

I kinda wish the old assasin got some more screentime at the end there. Pondering the meaning of life and all.

Somewhat anti-climatic but I'm glad the old guy survives. Also surprised how fast he can subdue Frieren but it makes sense since his specialty is assassin trained to dispatch mages quickly. It actually makes a good balance to the power level.

People mad when they spares him forgot that friren is pacifist unless one's truly hurt her comrade

I question if he could’ve actually killed her, remember the last time someone tried to cut off her head, and the fact that having lots of mana makes you durable, we’ll never know, but I somehow doubt he would’ve been able to
It’s rather shocking actually that he could grab Frieren at all, this implies he’s outright faster than soul track

Also other notes. Frieren was fully planning on killing that man. She fired soul track directly at him immediately, he just dodged, she’s not a pacifist, but she’s also not a murderer, also as soon as stark arrived, it was already too late, as seen, he was immediately unable to pull off his duty, was defeated, and talked down

Hmm.. We already know that Frieren could protect herself with mana, assuming it works against a knife the same way she protect herself against the magic rope/string of Dracht.

She lets herself being pinned down easily when she knows the danger is not that great. She is not eager to kill, we know that she could use mana without her staff too. I think she have the hability to kill him with a stare.

But more than that, I think she is quite skillful on reading people mood and drive. She understands that the assassin fear of death so his resolve was wavering from the start.

She really is a mage of a peaceful era in her own way.

Another note, the empire let rogue a golem that destroys fields, warrior nobles are discarded, etc. So the state of the empire may have let the original assassin association to rot, and their purpose may not even be valid anymore. It would be odd that the other were living fine after getting a family and so on without repercussions.

You'd think the oldest man (father) could have travelled to their headquarters after a decade to check if the mission is still valid.
I think they intentionally didn't report back when there was no contact for a long time, since they wanted to stay forgotten. Or at least that's how I understand page 16. They got accustomed to their lives in the village, married, and had children. Why'd you report back in such a situation if it could mean getting a new mission assigned?
Seems like they were aware their mission had been abandoned as well but they continued either out of habit / because it was their purpose in life (or so they told themselves) and/or probably also to have an excuse in case their mission was in fact still ongoing...

WHY DID YOU LET HIM LIVE????

Edit: Honestly, someone breaks into your residence and puts a knife to your throat. That MF doesn't deserve to be breathing. I don't f**king care some sad-sack back story they have. They came in with the motive to end mine. End story.
The real question is:

Why did he let her live?

He could have ended Frieren's life right there even though Fern would incinerate him, even though he is nearing the end of his life, even though she was the last on his list and killing her would complete his lifelong mission; but he did not want to die. His mission had changed, Spy X Family style.

Also to everyone thinking their journey is anywhere near its end:
looking at chapter 105 page 8 we can see that the northern plateau stretches at most half as far from north to south compared to the Empire.
If we look at chapter 8 (page 3) and I'd say the distance from their starting point to where we are now is about the distance that's still left. Took them over 100 chapters in which ~3 years passed.
That said, with the winter gettinger harsher the further north they go, I could see more years passing (if they have to stay in one location during winter again) during a similar amount of chapters...
