Because people aren't good at nuance something. It's either good, bad or "meh", but that last case is usually in the minority.

Also, this manga evokes emotions. In a kinda cheap way, because we all know that Frieren will witness all the people dying that she tries to connect with and there will be the question why trying to connect in the first place, if its only suffering and blablabla. Even if it's cheap, evoking emotions in some kind of way engaged people.

And for the rest: Don't get me wrong, I like this manga. Might buy it if it's released in my language. But it's not a Masterpiece (yet)

@Succubewbs in my opinion this story is rated 9+/10 because of it's consistency the main focus of the story is to approach how the different races experience time in a fantasy setting and character building, the main character and all side characters so far have been true to their personalities and influences around them (having a stable and steady growth), the art work for all aspects is good, the story so far hasn't used a cliche shounen plot development, focusing in the slow pace story tell aspect, (while in others types of story could be essential for plot development since the author would need several ways to pull enemies from to maintain the story alive).

Probably another factor that is playing favoring a higher score is "the popular isekai i'm the chosen one hero of the next world" makes several interested in a different setting for a fantasy not exactly focused on several battle oriented hurdles nor plotting behind the scenes, just the everyday life of an Elf that lives for millenniums of years is enough.

To be honest i don't find the rating to be inflated by favoritism like several popular titles or wannabe popular titles.

If they’re literally traveling to a place where they can talk with dead people thus rendering the manga 100% pointless in narrative and theme imma laff

Just to add to the discussion, I think it's a breath of fresh air to this genre. We get to see how the Hero's party affected the lives of people through Frieren's eyes. It's the concept of "what happens after the happily ever after" turned up to 11.
It also encapsulates how lonely it can really get being alive for so long can be, and as people said, the character development and bittersweet tone of the whole manga is really really well done.

It seems Himmel is the one aware of Frieren's long life the most. While the other two members kinds of accept that fact and choose to partly ignore it, Himmel is more active. Throughout the chapters, it has been shown that he deliberately left behind unfinished tasks (killing the sealed demon), mementos (his and their party's statues, flower field,...) to keep Frieren accompanied.

I really love Himmel and his precious action that always leaves a precious impression for Frieren ...

Himmel was quite a smooth talker , wasn't he? ;)

On this story ... I'm taking it like if we had a book about the Lord of the Rings Legolas far after the Brotherhood of the Ring saga. Frodo, Gimli, Aragorn .. all dead or gone to a better place. Almost all elvenkind also gone from Middle Earth. Dwarves slowly going away and Middle Earth becoming a world of Man... what would a holdout of another era do in that new World?

P.S By te way , the above is canon in the Lord of the Rings universe. In fact the book ends with Legolas going away from Middle Earth, far after all the others chars dying or moving away. Tolkien could invent a fine legend-like story, but for sure he didn't knew how to make a good ending :p

@Succubewbs For me it's the same as Girls' Last Tour or, to a lesser extent, Yokohama Shopping Log. It's very tranquil. In spite of all the sad events that have happened, they are very peaceful, calming stories, free of drama. We get a crystal clear view of the world, without the negative emotions you'd expect from protagonist's best friends dying. Or a war that wiped out humanity. Or a soft apocalypse. And, for whatever reason, that is so enjoyable I can't find a single reason to give them something less than a 9, usually 10.

That's just my perspective though.

@Succubewbs Well this is a really good story when you can care for a dead character that was only alive for 2 chapters.

What strikes me about the story is the mature way the author handles death and grief. Frieren barely cries, yet you can feel her sadness. She looks for magic books as a coping mechanism, which is how real people react to loosing a close one. You never really fully move on.

@Sep10trion Realistically, even if an elf and a human could successfully mate, the offspring could have a number of problems like sterility. This topic isn't always brought up in fantasy settings in that way, but there is usually some sort of stigma about it in both the elf and human communities. Probably to make for an easy "Woe is me, my past is full of being ostracized by both human and elf, I don't belong anywhere" which is such overused garbage at this point. Or, it's just not physically possible to begin with. That might be the most merciful route for character and reader alike.

@Glomoro On D&D a half human half elf has mixed traits but their soul is fully human, so with no elf soul they lack some of the most important elvish aspects and on top of that once they die they wont go back to the elf afterlife, so they are literally an inferior species, birthing a half elf is heresy because you give birth to a soulless miserable existence incapable of experience the true joys of elvenhood.

So they have a pretty good excuse to be a bunch of racist assholes.

Fern and Stark really seems to be set up as a real ship the more we see them banter.

Heh. I like how they say their destination is Heaven. Because Himmel means Sky or Heaven in German.
