Without reading anything ahead of the first chapter (and thus without spoiling anything) I can already guess at least one early “plot twist”: despite being treated like sacrifices in the human realm, the exiled persons could have a very different reason for not returning to their unwelcoming homeland. (Instead of being treated with cruelty as initially assumed, they could have met a place where their non-combat skills are not to be discriminated against, and then why really leave?) Hence our main character is about to meet a large group of human non-combatants living their happy lives abroad.
