You're right (other than the witchraft thing I guess) and this countinued well until the Industrial Revolution (still a thing in places like rural China) but that was mainly for families making their living from farming, not so much for city folk. The city is where' you find grand bath houses like pictured here during the medieval or renaissance periods - this whole idea of an isolated village hosting them and having lots of guests is far fetched.
