showing that you are killing people who may be broke and have a family to return to
the insanity that ensues
religious dogma serving as a motivator
some paint a picture of a twisted society where the values of that world's inhabitants are much different from ours
now in SAO there's a problem b/c a game developer by the name of Kayaba Akihiko is practically glorified by people like Kirito
despite being a mass murderering scumbag who has no clue why he killed so many innocent young kids (yes when asked why he trapped all these kids to die the only thoughtful response he could come up with was "I dunno")
b/c SAO is shallow in most forms people often ignore this fact, to look at the more compelling braindead rapist antagonist, an archetype that's overused... but people still find Akihiko to be quite objectionable
