The evidence I mentioned was also concerned with vertical localization (first discoverer, in fact) and there were a lot of follow up studies, but never has the effect been described so drastically as "utterly unable to tell". It was always established that while present, the effect was highly individual. Also the auricale, the pinna and the earlobe are just synonyms for the same structure. Do note as well, that the previous guy described it very differently than just a question of height.

The earlobe is a part of the auricle/pinna. It's the flappy bit that sometimes connects to the neck but has no hard cartilage in it, and is typically what gets pierced (other piercings are deliberately called cartilage piercings for that reason lol
But to answer your question, I have no idea, and I'm sure it is highly based on the individual as everyone processes noise differently, but the takeaway is that it impacts the way soundwaves enter the ear canal, which impacts the way those soundwaves are processed, and has repeatable evidence for affecting our ability to identify where a sound is coming from, which would be detrimental on a battlefield, even if only a minor inconvenience in day-to-day life

Pinna and auricle are the same thing, earlobe is part of them and not the same thing.
They merely packed the ridges on the auricle, which impacts the ability to tell audio directionality vertically. They obviously didn't remove the entire auricle, which removes the front/back directionality.
But since you're willing to accept small ridges affecting verticality, I'm at this point not sure how it could be any more obvious that the dish shaped attachment to your head, which makes sounds from the front louder and from the rear more muffled, affects your ability to tell where a sound is coming from in the front/rear direction. Y'know, the way more pronounced and stronger feature compared to those small ridges.
