I now think that the emperor intentionally pit his children against each other as "survival of the fittest" to see who should inherit the throne.
It might be, but with the concept of the concubine lady and the mc it challenges it a bit, maybe the MC was nothing more than a consequence of him wanting a partner not connected to the convoluted nonsense of court politics or was intentional conceived to be a initial target/ stepping stone for the other sons to deem who to support as heir. That or he's the atypical moron emperor who blatantly ignores everything that doesn't suit to his desires.

Indeed, concubines aren't prostitutes, but in the case of the protagonist, his mother is literally a whore. His father made a prostitute his concubine, which is why he's so hated by the nobility.
If a courtesan caught the kings eye then she must have been one HELL of a woman. Nothing wrong with the world's oldest profession getting an upgrade.
