I don't think it was a knife. It looked a lot like the riding crop he was using on the maid, best girl, at first. While I think that he was going to rape her, I believe that he would have whipped her while doing so, because a knife has too much of a chance to slip the wrong way and cut something he didn't intend to and kill her. Killing a noble would be an issue that he could ill afford to deal with.
