He only seemed to try to beat her, like he was beating the maid when the MC took over. Hence the stick.
It's still messed up, but a lot easier to forgive, especially since she's likely been looking into his recent actions after the news story which would show a complete change in behavior.

It wasn't a sword, it was the same stick he used to beat the maid, and it's likely the same kind of beating is what he tried to do.
Still messed up, but you are assuming a lot more than the story implies.
