Old man smells like a grave giving out order
Unlikely. Nobility was always captured alive for ransom if it could be helped, especially high nobility like a Marquess. It's one of the reasons they had such a cavalier attitude to warfare. The "bitter end" he spoke of will likely be only for his troops.

I guess we'll be armchair generals and battlefield spectators for the next few chapters.
Now that I'm comfortably in my chair, let me just remark that I find it ironic that the side without Roman artillery weapons fights more similarily to the Roman Legions than the side that posesses them. The Arcadian army has become one big anachronism like some sort of game of Civ 6 gone horribly wrong.

Nah, he's going out there specifically to die on the battlefield. He's old, the level of this fuck-up would ruin him as a noble and warrior if he goes home alive, so he's going out in a blaze of glory in his last campaign.

Ormasior-sama's being MUCH more openly active about this conflict than I anticipated. Especially considering that they described themselves as "shy". They're in this to win this. Or, well, goddess of war, so maybe she's just stoking the flames? Seems unlikely though. (prior to her appearance at Zirconia's rescue, i think we last saw her in chapters 61-62, where she told Colt-kun to accompany Kazura and learn swordsmanship from Zirconia.)

Does Japan have no arms black market? I'm pretty sure I can get at least a mortar and dozen shells for $30-50k

For pistols, but not rifles. Not even shotguns.
And you would need to develop contacts with the Yakuza, or likely one of the foreign underworld groups.
Someone with no experience or contacts in that business, just a lot of money, isn't going to get you good results.

His best bet would be finding a fixer who can get him what he wants, but that would take time. And given how he's got so few friends and associates outside of the local manager of a home improvement store, how would he go about doing it?

That's just what the kid assumed she was, it was never comented on or confirmed. It seems more likely that she's a similar type of supernatural as the talking wolf (maybe the very same). The wolves seem pissed at Valvert for their little deforestation campaign in persuit of iron. I don't really see how they figure Arcadia or the rest of the world willl be any different, there's no going around the fact that primitive smelting requires shitloads of fuel and Valetta can't hope to hold everyone accountable when there's an advantage to be gained by working as fast as possible.

Sure it does, but can you get access to it? Then why would the MC? The money he has is a pittance compared to the risk he'd present to the people involved - an ordinary guy no one's ever heard of who suddenly got rich and now wants truckloads of heavy armaments? Either some sort of maniac that's going to get them all in hot water or a narc by anyone's measure.

Few armies in history have had a policy of leaving their elite troops on the battlefield after retreating everybody else.

Those are the ones you need for your next battle! Don't throw away the Sacred Band for your conscripts!

It makes some sense, since only the most elite and disciplined would even attempt to "hold the line" as it were. Replace them with fresh recruits and they'll (rightfully) see it as a suicide mission and disperse as soon as you turn your back, giving the enemy a nice shot at it. You pretty much have no choice.

The truth is that a "manouver" like this is just not possible in a dire situation like that. Most armies retreated in total chaos when their morale broke. Those who managed to retreat in a orderly fashion thanks to rearguards, did so in large part thanks to the fact that the enemy was mostly exhausted as well and did not have the resources to effectively pursue. Here the enemy has an overwhelming advantage, orderly retreat is just delayed defeat unless massive reinforcements can reach them in short order. Otherwise the most sensible thing to do would be to surrender.
