If you're taking about the only English translation available by Yukkuri; he's doing the WN, not the LN. I made the same mistake in that assumption in the past as well. I remember him replying to someone else saying something like he didn't want any copyright DMCA, meanwhile the online Web Novel version is totally public where it doesn't require to be paid for, so it'd be safer to translate and post under the radar. There's currently no translation for the Light Novel version...although Yukkuri does pull the LN illustrations to splice them into the suitable chapters to make it more enjoyable and to get a better picture while reading. Example: You can see the difference in
the scene where Valetta challenges Issac to a match. The description of Valetta's choice of weapon is clearly different from what is shown in the Light Novel illustration of the duel.

doesnt "aisu" (ice) mean "ice cream"? i.e. a shortened version of the loanword aisukurimu (ice cream)

that would make sense why the guards didnt know what he was talking about, as ice cream doesnt exist in their world

Yes, Japanese does use "Ice" as a loanword/slang/shorthand for ice cream. The entire time, Kazura was saying "Ice" in English referring to ice cream, (which isn't being converted to the otherworld language) instead of "Kōri/ice" in Japanese; in which case, they would understand him. However, even if Kazura did say "aisukurimu", it's still Engrish, and would not have been converted. This is actually a common reoccurring theme every time Kazura uses loan words (i.e. gasoline) so it won't be the first time this happens and confusion arises.

As for them not having ice cream in their world...they don't really say whether they do or not. So far, they only mentioned having fermented dairy products. Although, them (possibly) not having ice cream might change in the future...as Kazura will be eventually introducing another ancient preservation method
ice houses
one method that was widely used before refrigerators was invented.

I think the thing I was most excited by was the map. Even though it is not very detailed I just love maps and knowing where certain things are located

By the way it's "Zawa Zawa" not "Zare Zare". I know it can be hard to tell the difference between wa and re sometimes! (BTW I only know this from having watched Kaiji) 😉

This makes me think of a kinder and gentler slice of life version of Malazan.
