This is just another cultural difference. I know it doesn’t make much sense to us Westerners, but for the Japanese, you’ve gotta clearly define what kind of relationship you have with people. Not sure how long you’ve been reading manga, but this whole thing about defining relationships is super common. It’s not unusual in manga to see characters who’ve known each other for a while freaking out when they find out one of them already thinks of the other as a friend.
Clearly it is, im still gonna talk shit about it because its ridiculous

When author takes "one step at a time" too seriously. Not that i dislike it tho. I LOVE IT

Aye fam, starting out as friends is something plus she knows that's she's in love meanwhile our slightly dense mc is hiding his feeling, hopefully some good stuff happens in the future

Imagine having the girl you like coming all the way to your school just to friendzone you. Lmao

Girl that's not just a punch, that's the whole boxing ring.
Also that's technically not a friendzone, since she did say she wants to be friends with someone before she dates them.
Exactly, Japanese is all about the subtleties (Please cook for me forever is a proposal). Asking to be friends here is actually more powerful than confessing. Only issue is if he's too dense to follow the trail.
