I'm not sure how these japanese highschoolers injure their hands cooking so much. Maybe the difference is that they use enormous knives for everything.

@thedude It is kind of amazing. Even when I do major cooking projects that are way out of my skill level, I don't actually hurt my hands doing it. Maybe they never heard of potholders or oven mitts.
Here's an opposite-of-pro tip for those 2d characters out there: If you're crap at chopping vegetables, just do it slow.

@thedude

The most common injury i've seen are cuts, which require bandaging.
On the other hand, handing over food with bandaged hands really show you put in some effort into it.
And if the food slowly improves after several attempts, you're putting in a lot of effort.

Injuries with food? Ahahaha, I can handle the knife well. But to everything that is hot as fuck, my hands are a friggen magnet.
[ul]
[li]Frying eggs? Oh I gotta flip the-AAAAAAAAAAAGH I TOUCHED THE CORNER OF THE PAN AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH. [/li]
[li]Pouring out the water outta pot of spaghetti? Pouring...pouring..."oh crap the steam is hot, shit, losing grip-FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF- MY HAAAAAAANDS"[/li]
[li]And my personal worst - taking the lid of a frying pan, while focusing on another pot:
Was grasping for the handle with my hand while slowly lowering it "mmmm, where the heck is it..." *shizzzzzzzzzzzle* "wait what the heck, I didn't put any meat into my pancakes,
why is there the sound of meat shizzling-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHHHHHH IT'S MY PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALM@!*$%#$#! " [/li]
[/ul]
Kitchen is not for people with low focus...

@thedude They don't. There are just many mangaka who never cook food for themselves and thus they believe preparing food is something like rocket science. At least we then also have the cooking manga authors who know their stuff.

Realistically the bandages thing is simply a convenient way to show that the person tried really, really hard to make the meal. Story-wise it's rare that you can show the person doing the cooking and struggling with it, but the bandages tell the reader all that happened. It's also used when someone spent a lot of time and effort making a gift they sewed or knitted.

Getting cut, even badly, while cooking isn't too uncommon though, even with professional chefs. I remember seeing an episode of Iron Chef where the challenger cut herself pretty badly. She basically put on some gauze, then wrapped her arm in plastic wrap to keep blood out of the food and kept cooking. Even if you use proper technique, dropping a very sharp knife, something easy to do with wet hands, can lead to getting cut.
