I get that it's the gag of this manga, but dang if my empathy is not getting triggered by this talk behind her back. I've been in that situation before, where I overheard coworkers talk sexually about another colleague and it was icky.

I guess this is a manga about boundaries and appropriate behavior. The pillow talk with your girlfriend is not okay with a stranger. The locker room talk at your sleepover is not ok at work. Because they think Tanagawa is an AV actress, they are crossing multiple boundaries with how they talk about her.

I think part of it is that celebrities are on some level "other" and on another level they are "familiar." Because they're just a picture on the screen, they can't respond to whatever thoughts or actions those watching them might take. This empowers people to treat them like passive objects and say whatever degenerate stuff comes to mind. And because they are also "familiar" people feel an imaginary sense of closeness that makes those thoughts seem appropriate. Assuming she is a celebrity sex worker, these kinds of social situations must happen often enough. She's either tired of it, or she's come to terms with it. It's an unfortunate side effect of celebrity.

But on the chance she's just a look-alike, those interactions are egregious and undeserved. Someone else commodified their sexuality, and she has to catch whispered comments about it. This happens to her because she's an attractive woman, not because of any choice made. A consequence of our selves being treated like commodified images under mass-media capitalism. We see a stranger not as a person with ideas, desires, dislikes, hobbies, but as an object to project our desires on. A material to obtain. There's a lesson in the ick felt in this manga about not looking at your hot coworkers like jerk-bait. Hot people are people too.

I definitely get it. I like the manga because it's funny, and outside of the comments about her sexuality it's surprisingly wholesome how they get along (i.e., they're not outright being gross to her), but constantly objectifying her wigs me out*.

But I do wish they would just be friends and not care about whether she's an AV actress or not... But that might be the actual hook for its otaku audience they won't want to drop, which is unfortunate.

Its kinda hard for me to read this. Like make up your mind. You want to ask her or not? doing it sneakily doesnt make it better. Then we also give hints that the actress wasnt really happy with her porn job. Ig this could be a gateway for "but please know that you brought light to me with your personality through the avs" but still difficult to consume.

Put our Slice of Life genre out of your comment. Youre talking about school life romcoms or just general romcoms. Real slice of life is the ones where theres an absence of prioritizing "prettyness" but more on the slice of life. Like Skip to Loafer and Yugami-kun ni wa Tomodachi ga inai but i guess Yugami-kun is more of a friendship than romance. I guess theres also Zeikin de Katta Hon where its slice of life of a library but with hecking beauties and bountiful great personalities but without romance... And all three of those got taken out from the latest dmca... i miss them.

I have an expression, "Hot enough for TV, Talented enough for Hollywood." Media has to sell, and sex sells, so we get an abundance of attractive people in our media.

I agree that what you say happens a lot in romance/slice of life manga, but it's not always at the expense of personality. That's part of what separates the great ones from the herd. Something like My Dress Up Darling, which has a sexualized FL but doesn't take shortcuts with her character or personality. And then there's the SoL that isn't very ecchi- Hirayasumi or Skip and Loafer stuff.
