It's not like he gave her an elaborate cake or a really fancy dish. It's a rice ball or miso soup and the fantasy people all cream their pants as if it's the height of cuisine. Even though medieval-level food wasn't all trash or inedible gruel especially as long as you were anything above a peasant (like, say, a royal knight.)

In fact most of the traditional dishes are from that period. The industrial Revolution banished a lot of them that only could be preserved in rural areas.

we have it explained (by someone else) that it is true in real life. not counting manga, I myself remember seeing it in american cartoons and european comic books (the disney ones were brought here localized, but the drawings made it clear it was the original intention too). plus brazilian comics themselves from before anime became popular enough it would be an influence on them (but not the other sources mentioned).
