Honestly I don't think the author is giving Mia enough credit. She is self serving but she is not stupid as the author/narrator describes her action. Just establishing contact would be enough so I don't really understand why the guard would be irked by doing "just that", also Mia knows the situation implicantion like when she apologized about the tree and how overall she behaved. No spoiled, brain rot princess would be so polite or actually proposing reasonable solution.

I agree! I think that with her having the knowledge of a possible future (her memories and her diary) and the drive to survive (death by guillotine would suck) she will act however the situation requires. Whether that is being a spoiled selfish noble or a thoughtful and wise noble who helps to guide her country to a happy future.

Something that we as readers are not taking into account is that up until she awoke as a ten-year-old she was a spoiled noble. Everyone in the country would have known and expected her to have a selfish personality. That is why the guard was irked with her. This is similar to the person who is annoying at work suddenly being assigned to a project you are working on.
