Uhm... what was this fight about again...? I don't remember by now. :notlikethis:
One wants to become the leader of the nation as her born legacy to do so, but would give up everything she's made and come to care for to accomplish it, if it means everyone else gets to be happy. The other wants to become an immortal Spirit even if it costs her her humanity, just so the other can continue to be themselves, and isn't taking no for an answer, putting the two of them into conflict over the other's future.

Euphie wants to become a specific type of immortal, which would make her egligible to become queen in place of Anis.
She wants to do this, to safe Anis from the need to become queen. afterall Anis personality and interests make her unsuited to be queen, she is better suited to research magicology to advance technology, for the good of the kingdom.

Anis wants to stop Euphie become immortal because they already learned that being immortal will likely lead to a fairly miserable life.

so essentially they try to save each other from a life of misery.

(all of this wouldn't have happened if Anis' big bro would have had access to a psychologist)

Does Euphy really think Anis would accept her sacrificing herself so Anis could happily research magicology? Does she really think Anis would be happy about her best friend queen consort-to-be live on for eternity slowly forgetting about Anis?

Or if they established democracy... or if they cared they could just adopt another noble that is fit to be king/queen. But hey...
Or Euphy marries Anis and Anis develops some way for two women to have children with her magicology.

Maybe I'm stupid, but if nobles are the problem, as royals, why don't they "simply" flip them off?
I mean, Anis is legit trying to better the lives of all citizens....the fact that the nobles are against it would normally be reason enough to completely delete them and any form of nobility class/system

Doing so unilaterally would upend the entire nation.

The nobility can also use magic, whereas the commoner people cannot. It could lead to open civil war, seeing mass death and destruction.

I also think this fight is stupid, becuse there's almost always a viable third way, but it's the both of them standing up for their ideals and staying true to their character designs, which is why it's happening.

I do think Euphie is fucked in the head for going the "I'm okay with you hating me forever if it means I'm the only wound in your heart" route, because it's such a selfish motive that completely denies Anis her feelings on the matter out of some perverse, sanctimonious need to "save the poor girl from herself" - effectively admitting that Anis is incapable of doing anything about her situation and coddling her in a super emotionally abusive way.

Really, Anis got fucked super hard by reincarnating here. Loves magic, but can't use it. Makes her ineligible to succeed the throne, but is the only royal who can. Is told her whole life she's worthless, until suddenly she's needed. The one person who was supposed to absolutely have her back, now tells her she needs saving, and will become an inhuman immortal just to keep Anis from misery that's not even guaranteed to happen, if they played their cards together in the right way.

Everyone just kinda shits on her or patronizes her and she just....has to let it happen because in the eyes of this world she's an abomination. And even her workaround is seen as heretical, and the woman she loves is throwing her own humanity away on some pretense that it's going to make Anis happy watching her become someone incapable of love.

Just sucks to be the protagonist here, in my mind.

You said it yourself, the third option is to essentially throw the nation into chaos by ignoring tradition and telling the nobility to get fucked, inevitably leading to civil war.

The only saving grace is that the dragon's curse that may allow them to live long lives side-by-side, long enough to develop a cure for the amnesia or a way to both die.
