IRL we just have the fire source, and a temperature gauge keeps an eye on things. Also just have lots of water. Well, actually IIRC it was more "don't run out of water"

I think if physics and magic are both at play, the fire stones have a temperature limit

Having your source of heat be entirely encased without smoke or inconsistent hotspots greatly reduces difficulty and ability to detect. Sound would still be an issue, but the comfort alone would be MUCH easier to do.

Stirling engine

I think this is going more for a valved high pressure steam engine, similar to the double-acting horizontal stationary steam engine. Very similar to what was used on old steam trains. With the 2-d flat drawing it took me a bit to figure out how the valving was supposed to work on the design.

With being able to magically heat and cool the air I think you are correct, a Stirling engine would be more efficient. Nice find, I completely forgot that motor existed!

Is gaining the archive only a one-time chance? It seems that Alma lacks some basic talent and confidence, but what about after she's been her assistant for a period of time? Could she try to gain the archive again? Seems like she would be more aligned with the mc after gaining that "from scratch experience" and some confidence. I'm kinda hoping that's the case😄

Let's take a minute to remember steam engines were invented by Archimedes, way back in ancient greece, yeah the Eureka guy. So no, it's not out of place to "invent" that for a medieval country. In fact, if they didn't go through the same kind of dark ages we did with obscurantism and religion, they should have a lot more stuff.

Fun fact, the basic design of a nuclear generator, is just that of a very big steam engine. You just massively increase the steam pressure, and with that the size and number of turbines you can run with it.
So... If MC has the knowledge of modern world, and a big enough magic stone for power... Just saying.
