A monster attack and his parents were killed, presumable also a lot of others were killed, with the rest fleeing. However, it's a nice looking town and a big castle, nothing in ruins, so it had to be rather prosperous. People who fled would come back since the town has all of their possessions. I guess also bandits would come, to rob a place with little security.
This isn't making much sense, but of course that's natural for isekai.

It's really just a step above the bare minimum equipment given and whatever you are applying to will be what you do there, there is no "fit the workflow to your liking" kind of shit, they just do most things to make sure you don't die/suffer in the company's cause, that'd be a bad image.
Like if there is this one dude overworked to hell, he will surely say don't go to his workplace or straight up tell to avoid it, and the only control the workplace can do to him is to seize his voice and time to make sure he won't be able to socialize or make any meaningful moves that will badly hurt the workplace's image. Them black company worker always silent and tired is for a reason more than you think.

Can't runaway, can't stay and do nothing, can't hide... but there's "a certain noble's territory" directly south? Couldn't he, I dunno, sell his land to that noble and live free of responsibility from there? It's already got the groundwork set up, if maybe needing some repairs done from the monster attack. There's nobody there to get upset with him for selling the place. I don't understand the thought process (outside the obvious "plot must happen").
