If it helps making you feel better at all (or taking your mind a little bit away from reality), the evil magician was quite proud and direct of his “evil” traits and the evil god he worships here. In the RPG sense, it has less of the negative connotation and more of an aspect/alignment (or element, as another commenter has pointed out above).
I always thought it was neat when RPG characters following an evil-alligned diety would proclaim their skills and religious practices as "holy", because of course from their perspective that's what they are.

People even IRL doing horrible things to other people don't themselves declare their actions evil, or even dark. Instead they use terms like "purification", "reclamation", "restoration", or like a certain 4-kingdom state "reformation".

For a few decades now, when they label any new US law as "XYZ reform", what it really means is another 6-letter expression: BOHICA. 😏
