Yeah it's really weird and kind of creepy actually. Like, you guys KNOW that people can purely platonic relationships and that those can be just as important and necessary(and in some cases even more so) than romantic/sexual ones right? I feel weird thinking that Luxi's mom is not being unreasonable while everyone else seems to feel otherwise. It doesn't justify how overbearing she is as how a parent should not be, but I do find it understandable how the generational trauma stemmed from poverty and rigid tradition would do her in to the point that she would make bad decisions. I'm Latino and it's the same thing over here. I think a lot of people just don't understand or WANT to understand how brutal shit like this can be where you're poor AND have had to work from a young age in what is likely a backbreaking soul sucking job is like and the impact it'll have on you as a person and how it shapes your values and views. Thankfully I've never had to live that, but there were periods in my life that were HARD and missed out on pretty much missed out on huge chunks of my adolescence and teens and I know family who also had rough periods and had to go through some really hard times.

Maybe it's just me, but I think the fact that Tong Tong's mom didn't grow up in rural poverty and seems to be a Glamorous Single Mother to Lin Luxi's Struggling Single Mother might be a big point of important contrast.
