I mean, I feel you, but the moment the author realized what committing to having 101 characters entailed, any potential display of depth that any of them might've shown was basically done for. Everyone needs a single core character trait to... well, be, and there's not enough time in the world to show much beyond that when most of your series' runtime entails drawing a double-digit number of characters. While what you said did make her an interesting character, it didn't have a hook to make jokes out of, so she had to be saddled with the role she did for that purpose. They can still bring that depth back like how they do when occasionally expanding on other characters, but 99% of the time the core trait is all anyone is gonna get just for the sake of the author being able to complete any given chapter within a page limit considering how even just one-line/one-panel interjections regularly fill up chapters in this series...
That said, could you imagine how impossibly convoluted and melodramatic (and no longer a gag manga) this series would become if they preserved even just that basic commitment to displaying depth for everyone, and writing the group's internal interactions with that in mind? This'd have the goddamn tragedy tag if we got an arc exploring why the homeless alcoholic became the way she is and how she struggles to function day to day, even if they somehow resolved it cheerfully & inconsequentially like with the heart-lifting arc where we explored the socially alienated mute suffering from family abuse. I wonder who our guy would say "shut up nerd, I love her so it's OK" to make the world accept that staging an intervention to stop someone from committing suicide via cirrhosis is wrong lmao

You also gotta take into account that sometimes not all of their layers fit into a scenario in the first place, for instance there's really no reason to bring up Hahari's dead first love here, or any other character traits/ layers she has because that would make no sense in the context of this chapter as she is just goofing around.

I'll use myself for an example, I suppose. I love horror and I love romance, occasionally I'll mix the two, but often times I'll leave them separate. When I choose to focus on playing a horror game and forget all about romance, does it mean I've lost my ability to love/ my passion for the romance genre? No, it just means I'm playing a horror game at the moment.

People can have layers and depth without showing it off 24/7.

I completely understand but the reason people question if hahari or kusuri have regressed is because those layers have not come into play for a long while.

The story has barely made mention of hahari's traits being a business owner or kusuri's desire to make the immortal drug recently and because of that you can occasionally forget that hahari is supposed to be a business woman due to the way she behaves in the manga, and you have not been shown another scenario that tells otherwise.

This problem is probably more prevalent for those that have been here since the beginning and won't really exist for those that have binged or are new to the manga and also this debate would be invalid if the author were to make a new chapter or make mention of kusuri's desire or hahari's traits.

This issue could be easily fixed by making a series of stories that focus on the life of certain characters when they aren't with rentarou but this seems unlikely since it looks as if they are rushing the story.

Like the girl that loves it when there are a lot of something, only got depth added to her in a manga extras not even in the main story.

Hmmm if only there were entire chapters devoted to just the girlfriends, they could call it their... Daily life or something, and it could be a series of little peeks into the lives of the girlfriends away from Rentarou...

Oh wait... They do have that.

And in fact Hakari and Karane had an entire chapter dedicated to their double date with a couple of other girlfriends.

I get your point, but the main focus of the story is still Rentarou, so making too many of those stories would just be going off track really.

Y’all commenting like Hahari being this unhinged is new or is a sign her character degraded when her Going from a serious mother to a chummy mommy has already been addressed in chapter 28, AKA The First Baby Chapter (dun, dun, duunnn)

Reread the chapter for the finer details but in short, Hahari being serious was her holding back and trying to be a good mother. After joining the family, she stopped feeling the need to hold back— this Hahari has always been a baby loving maniac, even during her cold faced days. (that’s gap moe baby!)

After chapter 28, she really stopped holding back (not that she really was before that) and you can thank Hakari (oh, and Kusuri) for that.

While i do know what you mean, and that her character development kinda crashed, i still do think that the fact that hahari know, understands, and interacts with everyone throught this this chapter kinda proves that she is an amazing character, and she has grown from the heartless mother, who, sincerely and in all due respect, locked up her child in her room.
