tl;dr: these last two chapters are a little too heavy for a fun harem series

I'm sorry, but like I said the last chapter, her mother has a point. And obviously, abusing your child is a no-no.
It's not like she's retarded or anything (although severely lacks practice with talking because... she doesn't), and tbh, Rentarou/Rentarou's family are all just enabling her at this point. It's only tolerable in anime/manga, but not really in real life.
Again, cute and quirky anime traits are usually easy to "don't think about it too much it's cute/anime", but the author turned it into a serious issue with the talk and the um, abuse. 100 Girlfriends is a usually lighthearted series, which is why I found these recent chapters with Shizuka jarring and why I dislike them.

Not to mention that:
  • Her mother has very valid fears for her future, although she did it the wrong way and actually made it worse, if not at least stalled Shizuka.
  • Rentarou: "So what if she's not very good at speaking?!" Um, she's way WAY worse than "not good" at speaking my dude.
  • Unironically, Rentarou did most of the talking for her.
  • And then... the chapter just ends with all of them still enabling her. I guess her mom being a little less strict/abusive would help Shizuka, but now it just makes Rentarou look like he doesn't want to help Shizuka become better.
Me personally I think of you using the word "enabling" made everything you said lose a lot of validity and actually makes if you've never been in a situation like an enabler. I don't think of what everyone in the harem is enabling, especially giving that one of the first interactions with the girlfriends is her to become a more open person. I think you're problem more stems from your first point:it becoming too serious. A lot of the stuff in this manga aren't and when they are most of them outside of this and maybe 2 others often is used as the butt of the joke. Which is why in general we don't see much of a character's personal problems outside of there introduction.

Also as someone who has lived with an enabler and lived with a enabled person it is completely different. The girls never act like her problem is perfectly ok or needs to be sympathized with. Especially with what you put as the main enabler the bf. All the characters have very big problems but because there are conferable with and around each other it seems as less of a problem. She being with this group of people has made her virtually becoming a different person especially with this chapter from not being able to say a word the one she liked without a book to actually speaking to her life long abuser mother. Also knowing a enabler if he really was one he wouldn't even have truly acknowledged the point or really even care about the point of it at all. The thing about enablers is that they do it unconsciously and they usually refuse to point out or even think about the people on the other side of the spectrum. When someone becomes a enabler they will not even call out that person there enabling in a any negative light and only see other people as the problem and that her problem is usually never even brought up. The only time he relates to enabler is when him talking about her good points instead of the bad ones but when you your like the woman and is only saying terrible things towards her I doubt anyone wouldn't do the same. The only reason the bf even won this argument is because of one point which was something that the mother never took into consideration.

Calling out the bf and the girls more than the woman who verbally and physically abused since there condition started feels weird to me. She only saw her own daughter as a weirdo that needed to change as soon as possible but when she takes any step in the right direction she gets shot down. Unlike with everyone else the mother has blatantly ignored her not only as a mother but also as a person so even if you want to call them "enablers" than the mother would still be a horrendous person for treating her own daughters life as a nuisance. Giving her a the ability to conversate with everyone at the same pace with everyone without discoursing her to speak isn't enabling it just making her easy to talk to compared to a parent actively disabling her to try anything different and just trying to force her to speak. Trying to call them enablers is like telling someone who's trying to work out to do things slowly instead of trying to max out a enabler. Getting into things, definitely with personal ones and trying to instantly fix and issue will become a problem before a solution, which is perfectly exemplified between her and her mom.

I think Shizuka is stutterer so no amount of talking would make that better. It's true that also no speaking at all is not the solution, but they just want for her to be confortable and, when she will, probably is going to talk even if little words. Forcing herself will only do more harm and this is a fluffy series. No need to take all serious.

Her mother was abusive and horrible but she does have a point. Not being able to speak like that is going to be a serious problem for her and Rentarou's family is enabling her instead of encouraging her to improve herself and genuinely helping her.

Sure she can get along just fine with Rentarou's family but what about with everyone else?

Nah I think them going heavy into it is a good thing. Part of Ren's situation is he's with a 100 soul mates but they're people only HE could be soulmates with because of their specific needs. As someone with a disability there are things like this which seems maladaptive to the real world but are relatively minor. Earlier someone mentioned steven hawking and that is a good example but there are people who are outright mute and similar. The kind of therapy you do to adjust a person to talking vs what the mother is doing is worlds different, with the mother's actions probably only worsening her condition. To help treat it, you would need proper cognitive behavioral therapy with a trained practitioner and progress through baby-steps. What just happened is not baby steps.

Momma Shizuka has zero concept about how people with disabilities live their life.
Can’t exactly blame her, my own family which is of an Asian country one, were geniunely baffled by the idea of accessible designs in public spaces.

Not to say that this isn’t a legit concern, but that just ain’t the way to go these days

I think people are too serious in commenting this chapter. For me I think it's a good chapter. Slightly heavy chapter for sure but still on brand with the manga. About Rentarou action I think it's reasonable. Sure, the Mom is correct in her argument but Rentarou is not wrong tho. It's her own way of speaking. She's unable to talk to people but with the text-to-speech she can communicate with people better now. Plus, she even started to talk with her own mouth even though not much but it's a slow progression. She even acknowledge she's a coward. Just let her grow in her own pace.

It's a pretty damn good chapter. That's all I want to say.

Has this mother never heard of mute people before? You don't have to physically be able to talk to get through life.

I find it ironic how the chapter in itself already mentioned that there really isn't a "shape" everyone should "fit" to be considered as "normal"(especially at the current times). But there's still people in the comments wanting to "fix" Shizuka to be more "normal".

Also to the person saying that author taking this topic in a more serious tone makes it feel "jarring"... Wouldn't NOT taking this topic in a serious tone make it actually more jarring 'cause it'd lead to people thinking you're belittling the situation by making it a joke.

Also since we're all weebs here... is verbal skill really that much necessary at the current time?

Shizuka can properly converse just not verbally.... is that different to how people are having discourses online? Are we just gonna ignore vtubers that are purely TTS but have a big following?

I wonder if she's ever read those books.
Best argument. I want to say "have you ever seen a grown, functioning member of society who beats their children?", but this is good and less aggressive than me.
This arc had the darker, more serious tone we lost after the Hahari arc. Of course, there's now enough weirdness that that creates problems for the arguments.

The last one: No sir, it's just your thought because the manga is still going. There's nothing certain so don't just say "Rentarou look like he doesn't want to help Shizuka become better"!

Yeah, that's my main point and complaint. Having quirks can be cute in anime, but not so much in real life.
My problem is that these chapters with Shizuka was a little too... not lighthearted to put it mildly (cough child abuse) for it's usual lightheartedness. So I lost my suspension of disbelief and brought Shizuka's issue closer into reality, which is why I dislike heavy stuff coming out of nowwhere and how these two chapters ended... which is to NOT solve her problem and just continue enabling her.
Then what? You want Shizuka to say normal immediately and not step-by-step? If it happened, then this situation was too rush and made the problem worse.

Agreed. This isn't "haha, quirky, she can be like that" this is "you are severely handicapping this person's future in society and ability to exist in a social situation". I don't like how this was dealt with.

Feels like people forget that Rentarou said in chapter 3 that obviously text-to-speech isn't ideal solution, but he is not Shizuka and can't perceive how difficult is for her to speak. And saying that Ren is enabling her is just weird, in recent chapters even before this arc Shizuka using her own voice occasionally, showcasing clear progress from what have been before, the tools and environment he created for her allows Shizuka to improve on her own pace. So where is the "not solving the problem" part, they not doing it fast enough? Don't buy your arguments, sorry

Unless there are raws for the next chapter already out, the author and artist are probably on a short hiatus again since anime is a thing.

There was a usual break 2 weeks ago, but last week chapter raws was released and today new one came out. Xun is just a little slow this week, not the first time that happened.

I LOVED this. I need more where the quirk of the girls are actually problems in society and how Rentarou and the family will help change that and give them a 'solution', so to speak. the writing shines more if we have more conflicts like this. We got girls who seriously need their quirks to be checked like Momohas Vices, Kishika's baby mode, Kurumi' hungry mode, Kaho's Scaredy cat mode etc...

Theres still a loose end here that left untied. we still do not know the actual caues of Shizuka's speech impediment and the only hint we have that it came from her Mother. like what exactly is it? and what is making her feel guilty about it that caused or worsened this isssue in the first place? realistically speaking...I would've preferred if Shizuka started to practice talking to her mother normally. small baby steps. But that last few panels with her mother...it looked kind of painful. Her mother seems to just start tolerating her instread of fully accepting her. I feel like its not yet over here. and I want to see more.

Hi Rereaders! This is your reminder that this was a proposal. This is your reminder that Shizuka can also communicate with gestures and JSL.
This is your reminder that Rentarou isn't always Insane with Love for his Soulmates.
