Can't have lesbians be happy smhdoomed yuri?![]()
title of the other one?Sherlock Holmes Yuri, let's gooooo! Officially the second detective yuri I'm currently reading. which is nice that it happened twice.
I think it'll be really cool if they do lean into the gay things of the era? cause there's lots of really interesting traditions and stuff people did back then that have been documented over the years. This was actually quite lovely. Sad that Robin and Margaret exist in a place where love between them is doomed...or at least in the sense that any romance they have would require clandestine meetings and plenty of subtlety, rather than any outwardly-displayed acts of affection.
Given the time period and the fact that the author's leaning into a historically-informed setting, Margaret is probably only afforded the freedoms of time and finances because she has a husband, but she's clearly able to meet with Robin on her own, as evidenced by her coming to the detective's residence without an escort. There might be moments shared between them in spaces where they're guaranteed privacy and no (or little-enough) risk of discovery, but otherwise—yeah, as the author says in their note on the final page, it's a story where it doesn't "quite work out".
But, sometimes that bittersweet aspect can elevate a work. And in my estimation the characters carry enough as-is that I think the bite of their circumstances does not harm the story being told.
Aruiha, Watashi No Mei Tanteititle of the other one?
Yeah this story is amazing and I'm glad it's being fully translated. I already bought all 3 volumes (or "chapters" since the volumes are just long chapters, really). I'd say the ending is more bittersweet though, rather than completely doomed. Really good either way. Some of the weird discourse around the series has annoyed me; the sort of people arguing it's not yuri because it treats its period realistically and also might not be a fluffy ending for them? A bit silly. They are undeniably and plainly stated to be in love. This was actually quite lovely. thank you for the chapter, so their just gals being unrequited pals in the time period that coined that iconic phrase. This should be fun to see how this develops.
Thank you for translating this! I have seen glimpses of it on Twitter and was really hoping someone would pick it up!
I love doomed yuri. There is so much yuri manga out there with happy endings now that doomed yuri is becoming rarer so it is good to the genre hasn't completely disappeared.
Thank you, it's my pleasure : )thank you!! ♥️♥️
