Gerald and Ryuka dynamic reminds me of Thorfinn and Askeladd. A very complex one where beneath all the filth, there is love and concern for their adopted child. Like Gerald cared for Ryuka to teach her how to survive in this world as a mercernary and thought her military strategies. Moreover one of the primary motivations for Ryuka to quit this commanding job is Gerald. And yet, both Gerald and Askeladd were merciless and brutal in their goals and surviving.

There's also Her Majesty Swarm but this manga outclasses all three.

dang, that calvary split is crazy, normally you'd need good discipline, good morale, good field officers, and then you'd need to brief them of the plan before hand, with good enough coordination and some luck only then you'd be able to have soldiers not sht themselves when they hear horse trampling behind them (crashing into them from behind if they fail to maneuver) and pull it off.
All of that simplified by one boy's magic horn skills is magical.
