You lost the battle before you even started it. I'm not saying that Japanese child-rearing is perfect, but they do emphasize empathy, and getting kids to apologize like this is normal for them. Kids need a LOT of investment, but afterword it's smooth sailing. To say they're MEANT to be a handful? What do you even mean by that? Of course it's extremely difficult to raise children. Time, investment, compassion, maturity, selflessness, etc., but kids can be even more mature than a lot of our selfish generation of "adults". Saying they're meant to be a handful reeks of low expectations and self-fulfilling prophecies. My parents raised 8 children and from my experience and their own words, we were great and obedient children that are still harmonious. On the other hand, some American families can't even raise a single child without them becoming monsters. Your original post said that this portrayal of children's maturity was unrealistic. I say to you that it is very realistic and possible with the right values and parenting methods, my own family as an example.Children are meant to be a handful.
