He's not a robber baron. He drilled into Elma from an early age basic swordsmanship and the expectations of nobility to protect the people/land. The problem is his whole outdated "class reveals personality" fortune-telling shtick and the idea that battles are waged with one champion cutting down thousands. He kicked out Elma because "Heavy Knights are indolent bums" and that runs against everything he thinks nobility requires.
= robber-baron.
They protect
their turf, as they see it, and nothing else.
Doesn't mean they don't care about "protecting the land"... Actual abusive nobles were
rare until well into the late medieval/early renaissance period.
Peasants and Commoners were very much not fluffy bunnies, in fact they made up most of the nobles' militia...
And ...Accidents Happen... Happened quite frequently to those nobles who...overextended their reach..
Except for the French** .. They never bloody learned, even after
several ... lethal surprises... and Culling of the Bad Seeds by mere "peasants". And two Revolutions effectively eradicating all the old Families..
And then they replaced the old Nobility with the Bureaucracy, which is just as bad.. They're a lost cause, really.
** This includes the high-ranking English, who were effectively french to begin with. Explains a
lot about the history of the Isles...
