@de_labaiGa Fine I should not have used the word rape.
But there still isn’t consent.
Going anywhere else than her country would be difficult, who they accept a knight with no background or, if she told part of the truth, a deserter that can’t be trusted (is she a spy ? Will she desert again ?)
Being a mercenary of some kind, crappy jobs and living conditions, always on the move,...
She’s got no money either...

@De_LaBaiGa

I think @breizh is in the right. For three points that can be read in this short story.
(1): Since a long time, they kidnap female warriors, and take them in their bases. It's a tradition for the warriors to find in this glorious way a strong women able to bear their children.
(2): The barbarians know from their former enemies that a woman warrior will likely be raped back home if she decides to refuse and go back because it has a utility for propaganda issues.
(3): All the kidnapped girls are conscious that they can't go home and live safely there.

Altought they don't force a relationship in a way we all think when talking about forced marriages, they KNOW that basically, kidnapping a female warrior is akin to condemn her to make a choice between a marriage "of love", or to be to be raped/killed/dumped when she comes back. The last possibility for here is to become an apatrid or a fugitive: Yeay.

We can't say it's a rape. But at least, it's a forced relationship sugarcoated. In my opinion, we can't say that's nebulous.

For the rest, I'm beginning to be fed up with this type of stories. That's not a type of romance I can identify myself with.

Friendly reminder that in our world vikings allowed divorce centuries before the rest of Europe even considered it.

The barbarians of the north respected the hell out of women.

@breizh there is consent tho, also there is even more freedom of choice than those noble's arranged marriages we see all the time lol

@DonHazzy She only accepted after she literally said herself that she has no choice, because she was coerced by the other girls from her village with threats/lies. That isn't consent at all, just like getting someone's approval under the threat of violence/death is not consent.

Don’t forget guys, this is fiction. If it really bothers you that much, just don’t read it again. Yes it’s morally questionable, but so are a lot of other manga on this site. If a manga bothers you and/or makes you uncomfortable, just don’t read it.

To be honest, considering knighthood on that era, it would be better to marry those barbarian than staying on the kingdom just to get 2 other job choices for retirement. Knight in medieval Europe is more barbaric than you think....

@LeRyzz ok but:

1 - they are absolutely free to do whatever they want after they are kidnapped doe, they can literally just walk away if they dont like the options presented to them, it may be awkward for us but its pretty in line for barbarians with honor codes.

2 - there's no indication that the barbarians knew about the treatement the female knights would receive before this conversation, the dude dosn't warn her about the dangers of coming back home, the wives do, and they only do it coz they think its her last chance to get married coz of her age,also they talk about it like a rumor, for what we know it may be the 1st time the dude is hearing any of this and even when he learns of this he just goes: ''You could always go back to those knaves'' while laughing probably coz in his mind dying fighting off the fuckers is a honorable dead. This guys kidnap girls on a whim, they are straight up meat heads.

Also:

- The are at war so by taking them to their village they are basically sparing their lives coz the other option is straight up dead in the battlefield.

- After the situation is explained to them they are free to do whatever they want, they know they have their honor as knights so they gamble their lives by choosing a girl, they literally put their necks on the line. Also any girl that decides not to stay now has the location of the village so that could comeback to bite them in the ass.

- They give them time to choose, like the other girls said they were properly courted, the case on this manga was fast coz she was extra hot blooded.

- If they know about the treatment then that doesnt change things too much either coz they are still at war, like if they find a strong girl their options are: kill her in battle, wind and take her to the village, spare her life and let her go knowing that she'll get treated horribly. Like thats it, so if they become interested in a girl of course they would pick the ''take her home'' option, in that case at least she has some good options.

this can be an amazing background core story. tweak the custom to include "living here for a month" a must before being released and remove the "kill me" thingy, both man and women have a right to do this custom. (also dont make it a horde)

its easy to fix this seemingly morally gray custom, just introduce another kingdom/country that didnt treat their soldier like this current one. make make one refused, back to being soldier and then they meet again at the battlefield. then author can decide wherether he wanna go love comedy or serious drama

I personally like how chill the "barbarians" are. They seem like the type to toss you a bottle of ale or mead for free. Then sing war songs while hopping on the long table.

@Hollow7F To be fair, there's also no evidence that the barbarians didn't know about the "ex-captive female knights get raped to be made an example of" rumor, either. The whole situation is incredibly manipulative from reuniting Seraphina with her friends, to Marie basically telling her over and over again almost literally right after she woke up to "just give in," and Marie stopping Seraphina from following through on cutting his head off with the rape rumor(which kinda gave me an "Oh shit, I need to use my last resort" feeling). Throw in the "you're getting too old to get married" stuff and she's pretty much being steered into accepting his proposal as the only option she has left.
